Mr. N. Muthiah first published ‘Arthmajothy' in 1948 on behalf of Arthmajothy centre Navalapitiya Sri Lanka. He found the centre in Nawalapitiya while teaching there to promote spiritual activities like meditation, prayers, religious instructions etc. ‘Arthmajothy' emerged as a medium for these activities and carried the teachings of Hindu Masters every month not only to other parts of Sri Lanka but also to India, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzealand and Canada..
Mr. Muthiah, a devout Hindu had a unique ability of explaining Hindu philosophy in simple terms and soon the magazine became very popular. He was also a well-admired preacher. He devoted his entire bachelor life to the cause of Hindu faith.
Many people called Muthiah, Swami, which form of address he denounced. He preferred to serve the people as a layman so that he could move with ordinary people closely. His dedicated services, his pious and amiable qualities won him several disciples in Sri Lanka and in other Hindu Tamil world.
The Arthmajothy Centre which included a printing press, a library and a prayer room, was completely destroyed during the 1983 communal violence and as a result the publication of the magazine was discontinued.
However it reappeared occasionally in Canada form 1991 to 1995 due to the great effort of Mr. Vadivelu Guanakanthan, a disciple of Mr. Muthiah.
In 1994 Mr. Muthiah himself was in Canada to address the Forth International Saiva Siddhanta Conference, a first of its kind for the Saiva Canadian community. During his stay in Canada Mr. Muthiah was engaged in various religious activities including the formation of the Ontario Hindu Religious Society. It was his wish that Arthmajothy be published in Canada on a regular basis.
In March 2000, the Executive Committee of the Ontario Hindu Religious Society, at a meeting held at the residence of Mr. S Somasundaram the treasurer, unanimously decided to publish Arthmajothy as a quarterly issue. Poet V. Kandavanam was named as the editor-in-charge with Messer's Siva Muthulingam and S Thirunadarajah as assistants. Accordingly Arthmajothy of the current format was launched on June 11, 2000 at Canada Kanthasamy Temple .
Today Arthmajothy is published by the Arthmajothy Meditation Centre, a branch of the Ontario Hindu Religious Society. It is registered separately with the Government of Ontario as a charitable religious organization and its registration No is 1476651.
Arthmajothy appears every three month regularly. 2000 copies are printed and distributed free in Canada and overseas with the support of our members and some business philanthropists. Interested Hindus living abroad need to send postage and or donations to receive the magazine or other publications to:
